World Drowning Prevention Day 2026 – Unite to turn the tide on drowning

Drowning is an issue that affects every nation of the world. Globally, more than 300,000 people lose their lives to drowning every year.

Drowning predominately impacts children and young people, with more than nine in 10 deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries, highlighting that vulnerable communities are most at risk.

In Australia, hundreds of families lose loved ones to drowning every year.

This World Drowning Prevention Day, communities across the world are uniting to turn the tide on drowning by promoting water safety, sharing lifesaving skills and encouraging simple actions that save lives.

Beatty Park Leisure Centre is proud to support Royal Life Saving Australia and the global movement for drowning prevention.

Here’s how you can take action:

  • Enrol in swimming lessons
  • Supervise children at all times around water
  • Check your pool fence and gate
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs around water
  • Wear a lifejacket when on the water
  • Know the conditions
  • Learn CPR
  • Train to become a swim teacher or pool lifeguard

Every small step we individually take can help save lives.
