Introducing our July Member of the Month – Phuong.
Phuong has been coming to Beatty Park since – wait for it – 1987! At 82 years of age, she’s more motivated than ever.
Phuong’s fitness journey
Phuong and her family immigrated to Australia from Vietnam back in 1978.
She exercises more now than she did in her twenties and thirties – back home, she was always working and didn’t have time for structured exercise.
After a friend encouraged them to join Beatty Park, Phuong and her late husband started coming in 1987, before we even had a gym. The couple did lots of swimming, then as soon as our first gym and aerobics studio opened in 1994, they were hooked!
Phuong’s routine
In 2001, Phuong retired at the age of 61 to help care for grandchildren. They’ve since all grown up, so she has more time to come to Beatty Park.
You’ll find Phuong here 6 days a week, regularly doing gym and sauna sessions as well as Les Mills Core, Pilates, Zumba and Bodyattack classes. Phuong comes in the morning because it makes her feel good, fresh and stronger throughout the day.
Phuong takes advantage of our complementary fitness appraisals. Recently, gym instructor Hannah has worked with Phuong to improve her shoulder strength, so you might see her doing lots of presses and rows in the gym, as well as lots of cycling.
To help improve circulation and care for the skin, Phuong has also been using the sauna since the 90s.
Outside of the gym, she enjoys walking in the park, gardening and spending time with her 4 children and 9 grandchildren.
Phuong’s workout buddies
In the early days, Phuong would come to Beatty Park with her husband, then they’d head off to the casino together afterwards!
The couple made lots of friends here over the years, including Lin (pictured) who they met in the early 90s.
Phuong’s husband passed in 2019 and since then, Phuong has been coming a lot more with Lin and other friends she’s made.
If you see Phuong around, make sure you say hi!
