Happy 80th birthday to our awesome Member of the Month, Jacek! πŸŽ‰

A Beatty Park member for 12 years, Jacek is a regular in the gym, pool and sauna. Outside of Beatty Park, Jacek loves ten-pin bowling and, just as much, the social connections that come with staying active.

We spoke to him about the importance of staying active as we age, his approach to strength training, and why keeping moving is such an important part of living a good life.

How long have you been coming to Beatty Park and what do you do here?

I came 12 years ago when this new gym opened. Before I was going somewhere else and this didn’t exist. I came to Perth in 1983 and I’ve been using leisure centres since then.

I do everything here. The gym, swimming, sauna. It’s all important.

After you hit the gym, work your muscles and everything, go to the sauna and relax.

What would you say to anyone over 60 about strength training about weights.

It's very important to move and have physical education. I know how to do what I’ve been doing; but I recommend that people not go straight to heavy stuff – just start easy.

When you get older, your muscles are going down, your hormones are going down.

But movement, flexibility, everything – it’s very important to live a good life.

Do you find your strength is as good as it has been over the last 15 years?

Yes. I keep at my level all the time. But I try to push myself. That's very important. Sometimes I lift heavier because, you know, the body needs a little boost.

Happy birthday again, Jacek! Your enthusiasm for movement, fitness and community is an inspiration at any age. Here’s to many more years of keeping active and having fun!
