2021 Pool Lifeguard Challenge

For over a decade, Royal Life Saving WA and Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics have hosted the Pool Lifeguard Challenge – an annual competition that tests the skills of lifeguards through a series of challenges.

Held on February 19 at Riverton Leisureplex, 14 teams from aquatic centres across the state competed for top honours.

Eight lifeguards from Beatty Park competed as two teams of four, taking part in five events:

  • Event 1 – 50 metre swim and manikin tow relay
  • Event 2 – Line throw challenge
  • Event 3 – 25 metre rescue and contact tow + CPR
  • Event 4 – Diving and retrieval challenge
  • Event 5 – Emergency and first aid scenarios

After a long, gruelling day, Beatty Park’s “New Team” – Brie, India, Sam S and Reilly – finished in 2nd place, while the “Old Team” – Hayley, Taylor, Josh and Julian – finished in 4th place.

Not only is the day-long challenge physically demanding, the mental pressure associated with the emergency scenarios is a lot to take on. For both of our teams to finish in the top 4 is an amazing result, and a testament to the skill, dedication and passion of our lifeguards.

Our teams earned $750 in prize money from this year’s 2nd place finish and last year’s 1st place finish. This money has been used toward training equipment for our lifeguards – including a baby CPR training manikin that our lifeguards, Swim School and crèche will use for future training.

Congratulations to Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre who took out the top spot, as well as HBF Arena who finished 3rd.

We’re looking forward to seeing how we go next year!
