Introducing our February Member of the Month – Prue!

A Leederville local and Beatty Park swim member since 2000, Prue is in the pool almost every day!

Why did you join Beatty Park?

I’ve been coming since I retired in the early 2000s.

I decided to become a member for my mental and physical health. I swim because I like water, I could swim all day! I’m just a water person.

I like the ocean and learnt to swim there but I don’t swim there anymore because it’s hard on the knees.

When I was working I didn’t swim as much, then some things were happening in my life – I got cancer, my mother and sister died… that’s when I got more involved in swimming, for the mind.

What motivates you to swim so frequently?

I don’t think about it, I just do it. I just make time for myself – it’s not a routine, there’s no set time. I’ve been swimming at night lately, it just depends on what I’m doing. I do voluntary work and various things, so whenever I feel like it I just get on the bike and ride down.

Outside of swimming, what else keeps you active?

I ride on my electric bike to and from here and I also go horse riding. I used to ride a lot, I had horses all my life. I still frequently go riding with friends.

I used to do a lot of hiking and climbing – but in the last 12 years I’ve had trouble with my knees. These days I go ten pin bowling with friends – we get together and have a giggle. Last time I went I got a turkey! (3 strikes in a row)

What keeps you coming back to Beatty Park?

It’s close and at night it’s lovely. In the summertime, you come here and you can see the stars while you’re swimming along. It can be a bit chaotic with all the squads but there’s always room in the slow lane for me. I can’t go any faster than I go but I don’t care because it’s my time for myself – it’s for me. It’s meditation.
