New Recycling Stations

Items such as household batteries, printer cartridges and light globes cannot be placed in residential rubbish bins and contain harmful substances.

These items can be properly disposed of in the new specialised recycling stations that have been installed at Beatty Park Leisure Centre and Hawaiian's Mezz Shopping Centre, as well as the existing drop off points at the City of Vincent Library and City of Vincent Administration Centre. See below for full details of what can and cannot be disposed of at each drop-off location, plus information about what happens to each material once it's disposed of.

 If batteries are not properly recycled they end up in landfill where they leak and contaminate soil and groundwater with the toxic metals cadmium, mercury and lead.

Plastic and metals recovered for reprocessing.

Chemicals used in glass and textile manufacture.
Fluorescent lights and tubes

Fluorescent lights and tubes only contain a small amount of mercury. Fortunately, the risk of mercury poisoning when a light is broken is extremely low.

Mercury in landfill, however, breaks down to toxic chemicals which spread through the wider environment into the air, water and soil.

Metals recycled, mainly for dental amalgam.

Glass recycled into wool for insulation.

Phosphorus powder used to make fertiliser products.

 Some mobile phones are coated with metals that can be toxic when left in landfill.

Plastics down-cycled into products like shipping pallets.

Some metals recovered for re-manufacture.
